C-41 film developing and scans to DVD.
We develop all types of film.

The Darkroom specializes in all types of color film (C-41) developing. C-41 film is the most common color-negative film and what most people associate with film photography. When viewed, the negatives will appear orange with the darkest spots of the image appearing light (negative). The orange base is compensated for in the formulation of color print materials.

C-41 was introduced by Kodak in 1972 and is known as CN-16 by Fuji, CNK-4 by Konica, and AP-70 by AGFA.

C-41, E-6 (positive color slide film), and K-14 are designations created by film manufacturers to define different types of film and the developing process. It’s not necessary for the photographer to know this code, but it tells the lab how to process the film – what chemicals to use, what temperatures, and what timing.

We process 35mm, 120, 220, disposable cameras, 110, 126, and many other types of films. We color, contrast, and density adjust each and every frame or you have the option of no corrections. The Darkroom film lab has been providing High-Quality C-41 film developing for over 40 years.

Most film developing orders are shipped back to you within 3-7 business days after they enter production. We are located in Southern California, so mail takes 2-5 days to reach us from almost anywhere in the country. Occasionally production times run a bit longer, especially before or after holidays.

E6 Slide Film vs C-41Color Negative Film

In short, slide film produces a positive image on a transparent base, while color negatives the lightest areas of the photographed subject appear darkest and the darkest areas appear lightest. The color negative film is then reversed during scanning and typically has an orange mask.

Slide film is commonly referred to as “E-6”. The development includes First Developer, First Wash, Reversal Bath, Color Developer, Pre-Bleach, Bleach, Fixer, Second Wash, Third Wash, and Final Rinse.   Development takes about 60 minutes, not including drying time.

*Due to EPA regulations, FujiChrome Velvia 100 cannot be transported or processed in the United States.  Velvia 50 is not affected.

thedarkroom-history

Our photo lab dates back to 1976 in the San Francisco Bay Area

Our heritage goes back to the 1940’s. Like most great photo labs, The Darkroom was started by photographers for photographers. Back then, it could be intimidating coming to a photo lab like ours, unless you were a pro. Unless you knew what you were talking about, you would get the “you don’t know what you’re talking about, you idiot” attitude.

Fast forward 40+ years to today and we are a very different kind of photo lab in a different locale.

Start Your Order

The Darkroom specializes in professional film developing and scanning… as well as Toy Camera Processing and scanning for various film formats such as Panoramic, Sprocket Hole, Half Frame, Square, as well as Cross Processing and Push/Pull processing.

We work closely with the folks who make Holga, Lomo and Diana cameras. We and our the people in our photo lab test new prototype cameras and formats and figure out the best ways to process, scan and print these images. We can handle your various films and formats…from Holga 3-D stereo, Lomo Horizon, Sprocket Rocket, Lomo Spinner, Lomokino and yes, even your Mamiya 645 or Hasselblad!

Our photo lab tests awesome, new films like the Lomo X-Pro, Lomo Red Scale, Holga True B&W, Rolli Cross Bird, Red Bird and Night Bird. And, if you can get your hands on any, we process Infrared films too! Once again, we figure out and establish the “best practices” for photo processing, scanning and printing these new films.

You have the total convenience of mailing your film to us (postage paid of course) for fast, reliable developing and scanning; plus we’ll upload your images to you from the photo lab so you’ll see your images before your package even leaves the photo lab in the mail on its way home to you

By the way, your satisfaction is always guaranteed at The Darkroom!
Please let us know how we’re doing. We’d love to hear from you!

Cheers,
The Darkroom
