Tri-X 400 one of the most popular film stock, not just in black and white, but of all film.  It’s known for its classic and absolutely beautiful grain that hasn’t changed since 1954 as well as its song contrast and rich tones.  It has amazing exposure latitude which allows it to easily push up to 3 stops and also means it does well with over exposure.  When metering this film, like most other black and white film, we highly recommend metering either mid-tones or shadows.  You don’t want to underexpose it.  When shot in contrasty light you’ll get dark blacks and bright pure whites.  It film is very versatile and works for pretty much any type of photography.  It’s commonly used for street photography and is a beautiful portrait film as well!

In our option, this film is the best lowlight film there is.  Its 3200 iso easily allows you to shoot handheld in most lowlight situations.   And while its a high iso film its’ grain is actually pretty fine thanks to the Kodak T-grain – when properly exposed its is less noticeable than a lot of other 400 iso film.  It has high contrast, poppy tones, and very good exposure latitude.  When shooting with this film we recommend rating it at box seed(3200) and when metering, err on over exposure, metering for the shadows.  Buy this film online – 35mm

Ektachrome comes in 35mm and 120.  It’s known for its beautiful color and like most slide film, has super fine grain, rich saturated color, and is great for daylight shooting.  For being slide film it has decent exposure latitude and does well with portraiture as well has landscapes.  When shooting with this film we highly recommend shooting in even light if possible and pay very close to your exposure since film doesn’t do as well with overexposure.

In our opinion, this film is one of the best budget films and is great for beginners since it does so well with over exposure.

Portra 400 is one of the most popular color negative films there is—and for good reason. It’s easily one of the most versatile and forgiving films and on top of that, it produces beautiful results.  400 iso is a great in-between – it’s great for our outdoor shooting as well as shooting in lower light and for being a 400 iso film it has a very fine grain that’s barely noticeable when exposed properly.  Portra has incredible exposure latitude meaning it does well with overexposure and it also pushes well.  It has medium contrast and is known for its warn tones which make it ideal for portraiture.
