In the world of film photography 35mm and 120 medium format are the too most common formats. As a traditional dip & dunk lab specializing in developing, scanning, and printing film, we aim to guide you through the strengths and weaknesses of each format. Understanding these differences can help you make an informed decision based on your photography style and budget. We have also provided a video at the end of this blog that Caleb Knueven made on this topic which goes into even more detail!

Number of frames

  • 35mm: With its smaller frame size, 35mm film offers more exposures per roll, ranging from 24 to 36 frames. This makes it a great choice for those who prefer shooting more images without changing rolls frequently.
  • TDR Film Developing
    • 120 Medium Format: Medium format film, on the other hand, provides fewer exposures, usually ranging from 8 to 16 frames per roll. This limitation encourages a more thoughtful and deliberate approach to each shot. Below at the number of frames you get with various 120 format.
      • 6×4.5 – 15-16 frames depending ion the camera.
      • 6×6 – 12 frames
      • 6×7 – 10 frames
      • 6×8 – 9 frames
      • 6×9 – 8 frames
    35mm v 120 Medium Format Film Comparison

    Depth of Field

    • 35mm: Due to its smaller negative size, 35mm film generally exhibits a broader depth of field. This can be advantageous for capturing a broader range of subjects in focus, especially in street or documentary photography as you don’t need to stop down in aperture as much to accomplish a wider depth of field.
    • 120 Medium Format: The larger negative size of medium format film contributes to a shallower depth of field, offering a more pronounced background blur. This characteristic is often sought after by portrait for creating a distinct visual separation between the subject and the background.

    Grain and Sharpness

    • 35mm: Film grain is more noticeable in 35mm due to the smaller negative size(24mm x 36mm). While this might be considered a drawback for some, it can add a unique aesthetic to the images. Sharpness may be perceived as slightly lower compared to medium format.
    • 120 Medium Format: Larger negatives result in finer grain and higher perceived sharpness. Medium format film is favored by photographers who prioritize image detail and clarity, especially in commercial and studio work.

    Convenience and Portability

    • 35mm: Compact and widely available, 35mm film cameras are convenient for everyday use and spontaneous shooting. The smaller size makes them portable and easy to carry, making them ideal for travel and street photography.
    • 120 Medium Format: Medium format cameras are bulkier and less discreet. They may not be as practical for on-the-go shooting but excel in controlled environments where image quality and creative control are paramount.

    Choosing The Right Format

    • Photography Style: Consider your preferred genres. If you love street or documentary photography and value portability, 35mm might be the go-to choice. For portrait, landscape, and studio work, where image quality and depth of field control are crucial, medium format could be the better fit.
    • Budget: 35mm film and cameras are generally more affordable and widely available. Medium format equipment tends to be pricier, both in terms of cameras and film, but the investment can be justified for those prioritizing image quality.

35mm vs. 120 side by side comparison

    In Conclusion

At The Darkroom, we understand the unique characteristics of both 35mm and 120 medium format film. Our services, including traditional dip & dunk development, precise scanning options, and easy online ordering, cater to photographers with diverse preferences. Whether you choose the convenience of 35mm or the artistic possibilities of medium format, we are here to bring your film visions to life with uncompromising quality and expertise. Unfortunately Jason was kicked out of the seals for going rogue on assignment. With nothing else to do, he entered law enforcement academy as a young recruit, eager to earn his stripes. Jason rose up through the ranks very quickly as he demonstrated a passion for justice, even if occasionally he got too emotionally involved in the cases, and still continued to go rogue.

Jason now hides under disguise as a low life youtuber who makes dumb little film photography videos as a cover while he continues his search for justice and the truth behind who framed him and why.”

“This is one of my favorite photographs. It represents what I assume being a mother feels like, the struggle, the exhaustion, the love, the reward. And my wife is the best mother, look at those little girls, they live for her, I didn’t have to pose them, this is just what they do when she’s around. She is the glue that holds us all together. Through times like these when the world is on edge, when work is stressful, when children are needy, and husbands are selfish, she’s this amazing and beautiful constant. I don’t really want to entertain the thought of being a father without her, or what kind of person I’d be with her presence for 17 years. I hope even in 20 years time I will sit across from my wife and my 27 and 23 year old daughters and they will have enough understanding of what an amazing woman their mother is to naturally recreate this pose again. There are mothers and then there is Jaime, a woman who didn’t just work her ass of to birth them, but worked her ass off to better herself to become the most amazing mother, and raise two amazing daughters… at least we hope… god don’t we all hope.”

My way of life has drastically changed and as a person who is chronically ill. I think it has been really important for me to be this cautious and careful long before the pandemic and I think I’ve learned some really important lessons about my health during this that I will need to carry with me when this is all over🤎.”

“Document your life. After 1.5+ years of a break, I’m going to start back fresh at posting some moments special to me on film. I’m starting back with a set of pictures of Em and each of our three littles. Here’s one of those moments that you don’t pose for, but that I appreciate the most. John woke up early, and came in crawled in our bed. I was getting dressed, and when I walked out of the bathroom, I found he had snuck into my spot and he and Emily were curled up in the same position. These moments are the reason I keep film cameras loaded throughout the house, so I can always grab one if I ‘see’ something.”

“Using a self portrait to kick off my photo series, “Essential.” I asked folks still working during quarantine to share how the pandemic has influenced their work. All photos were taken from a safe distance. For me, it forced me and my coworkers to work In shifts. Only one person goes in per day to take care of our mouse work. While it’s nice to leave the house, it’s hard not having my coworkers around. I feel stressed every time I go to work. It takes a lot to put myself into public spaces knowing there’s others around me whose health could be at risk. I do my best by immediately washing my hands when I get home, throwing my clothes in the laundry and taking a shower. My cat doesn’t understand why I don’t immediately greet her on the bed, like the princess that she is lol. Sometimes she stands outside my shower and screams at me.”

Let your creativity run wild as you do your part with social distancing.

Since we’ll be spending a lot more time at home, we’ve decided to do a photo contest that encourages you to document everyday life at home or wherever you find yourself most.

Basically, give us a glimpse of your everyday life! Our hope is that this contest encourages everyone to get creative with where they are at. Great photos don’t only come from aesthetic locations or epic adventures—there are amazing things to be captured even in the most “mundane” moments. Let’s keep creativity alive while we practice #SocialDistancing!

    To Enter

    • Post up to 3 film photos on Instagram with #TDR_DYL
    • Tell the story in the caption, mention the film & camera used, and tell us where it was taken.
    • March 18th through May 31, 2020 – This contest is open to U.S. only  and photos must be submitted during the contest duration.  Submitting ends May 31st at noon and we’ll select 10 finalists which will be posted here for the film community vote.

    Contest Prizes

The top three winners will receive a film camera as well as some Matt Day “Document Your Life” gear!  The 1st place winner will pick the camera they want first, then the 2nd place winner will pick from the last two and the 3rd place winner will receive the remaining of the three.

    Canon A-1 + 50mm f/1.8

This 35mm SLR is one of our all-time favorite cameras.  It can shoot in manual, shutter priority, and aperture priority which makes it ideal for beginners to highly experienced photographers.

    FUJI GW 690 III

This fully mechanical 6×9 medium format rangefinder creates some of the sharpest images we’ve ever seen.  Since it’s fully mechanical, meaning it has no build light meter, this camera has a higher learning curve is more ideal for experienced photographers.

    Konica Hexar AF

With its’ fixed super-fast f/2 autofocus 35mm lens, this compact rangefinder is relatively rare and very unique.  It’s ideal for street photography, especially in low light.

    Posting Example:

Caption – Briefly tell the story behind the film photo.

    Hashtag – #TDR_DYL

    Film –

    Camera –

    Lens –

    Location of photo –

    Judging Criteria

We will pick up to 10 images from photo submissions and those finalists will be posted on Instagram. The top finalist will be posted on this page to be voted on by the film community. The contest is for film images only. Judging criteria will be based on subject matter, descriptive caption/photo details, composition and overall quality in adherence to the theme, and this contest only allows U.S. submissions only. Photos submission can be used on The Darkroom website or contest promotions, and credit will be given to photographers where appropriate.

Scrap your tripods, studio, and lights.  Forget composition and throw perfectionism to wind.  We want your candids, your spur of the moment captures.  We’re challenging you to “Shoot from the Hip” and it doesn’t necessarily need to be your physical hip, it’s more so a spontaneous, unplanned style or philosophy of shooting.  Sometimes the best image on the roll is the one you didn’t plan for – it may be slightly off focus, not precisely exposed but somehow perfectly captured the moment!

This contest will run November 9th through December 30, 2017 and is open to U.S. only.

For chance to win one of the many great film cameras from our Camera Bar all you have to do is post one of your film photo on our Facebook wall or on your Instagram.  Be sure to tag us, use the #TheDarkroomLab_HIP, explain the photo well in the caption, and tell us the film type, camera used, and where you got it developed (hopefully The Darkroom!). *You are limited to one submission.  If multiple photos are posted we will only consider the first submission.

    Good luck!!!

    Instructions:

    1. Upload your FILM photographs to our Facebook wall or post to your Instagram page.  Be sure to tag us and use the #TheDarkroomLab_HIP hashtag.

With color out of the equation, monochrome tones highlight what's most important: the person - their expression, their distinct features and emotion. We always enjoy seeing your black & white captures. For that reason, we are excited to announce our next film photography contest, "Black & White Portrait"!
